Over the last few weeks, you may have noticed articles authored by different Editors.
As we had written here, being part of the Editorial team gives budding writers an opportunity to learn about topics of global interest, do the appropriate background research and understand different sides of an issue, before explaining it to other young readers.
We are excited to introduce our 2014 Summer Editorial team!
Meet Laila from California
As an incoming 6th grader in sunny Southern California, I have many bright spots in my life.
My passions include archery and diving, both of which require my complete focus, and clear my mind. I'm at home in the water whether swimming on a competitive team or while Boogie-boarding at the beach. Science has always been my favorite subject, because I love doing science experiments, and learning about scientific discoveries. When it doesn't drive my mother crazy, I enjoy playing soccer in our front hallway with my father and sisters.
Meet Sofia from California
Hi there! My name is Sofia Abolfathi and I'm entering 8th grade in Southern California. This is my second year as a Young Editor. At school, I'm part of the Yearbook Staff, where I've had some of the best times of my life. After school, I practice in the pool on a competitive swim team. When I'm not snapping photos or underwater, you can find me curled up on my sofa reading or writing, exploring the world around me with my microscope, playing piano, or at the beach either surfing or participating in Jr. Lifeguards. I hope you all enjoy my articles as much as I love writing them!
Meet Arbaaz from California
Arbaaz Muslim is an aspiring nonfiction writer who won first place at a middle school essay writing competition and wrote for Overture Literary Magazine. He is 13 years old and will attend 9th grade at Mission San Jose High School this fall. He lives in Fremont, California and enjoys reading (both fiction and nonfiction) and playing badminton.
Meet Akila from New Jersey
Hi! My name is Akila and I live in the Garden State of New Jersey. I am 13 years old and I will be going to 8th grade in September. I love to read and play the piano and violin. I also play basketball and golf. I am a First Degree Black Belt in Taekwondo. Though I do not watch much TV, I get my share of fun and news from Youngzine. I love making friends and interacting with them. I am excited to continue writing articles as a Young Editor this year.
Meet Vatsal from Texas
Vatsal Vemuri is 11 years old and lives in Dallas, TX. Vatsal will be starting sixth grade this fall. In his spare time, Vatsal likes to read fiction books. He especially enjoys fiction stories that are based on Greek, Egyptian, Roman and Indian mythologies. Vatsal also plays classical piano as a soloist and as a member of a Piano Trio. Vatsal likes to hang out with his friends and play Minecraft and basketball.
Meet Aaditi from Massachussetts
Hello! My name is Aaditi. I am in incoming 5th grader and live in Westford, MA. I really love to write, and I am very excited and fortunate to be working with a wonderful team of editors. I have been writing articles, poems, etc. from age 5. I spend most of my free time writing or swimming for the New Wave Swim Team. I also enjoy gymnastics, soccer, tennis, art, and dancing. I learn Odissi dance, a classical Indian dance. When I grow up, I would like to be an Olympic swimmer. I really like the books by Rick Riordan, like the Percy Jackson series. And I would love to travel to Hawaii when I grow older.
Meet Norbu from Arizona
I am 10 years old and I live in Phoenix. I have a younger sister. My interests include WWII history, the praying mantis and Star Wars. I have a pet praying mantis, whom I found in my yard. I also have a praying mantis egg-case that has babies emerging every day. I like Legos, especially Star Wars Legos. I participate in Spelling Bees, math contests, etc. When I grow up I want to be an entomologist (one who studies insects). I am enjoying being in the Young Editor program. Writing is a lot of fun, as is learning about new things.
Meet Jentry from Virgnia
I am Jentry, a 3rd year Environmental Studies and International Studies student at Hollins University in Roanoke, VA.
Meet Rachel from New Mexico
Hey Everyone! My name is Rachel. I am 16 and will be a Junior in the fall at my city’s newest high school, Centennial. Although I live in what many of my friends think is a boring part of the country, I love Las Cruces New Mexico, although one of my dreams is to travel to Europe. I am passionate about reading, history, and teaching. Someday, I hope to be an elementary school teacher. I am a member of 4-H and I am the president of my club, The City Slickers. As you already know, I LOVE to write and since I’m also fascinated with current events, being a Young Editor is something I look forward to when summer rolls around. I hope you enjoy my articles and feel free to leave comments or questions so I know what you think of them!
