Every summer, we invite young writers to join our team for our six-week Young Editor program. You will do what we do - author news articles that are read by your peers from around the world. We mentor and guide you through the experience.
Sounds like a challenge you are up for? First let's answer some questions that you might have.
What does "Young Editor" mean?
Think of Young Editor as an extension of our team where you will be writing main Youngzine articles. We will work with you and after the first 1-2 articles, most of our young writers are up and running on their own. We will be selecting six young editors to join our team this year.
How old should I be?
Most of our Young Editors are 12-15 years of age with strong writing skills. This is because you will be writing on politics, science, environment and other current events (news) which will require reading and understanding the background material. If you have strong writing skills, are part of your school newspaper or see yourself as a future journalist, this is for you!
How long is the program?
It is a six-week program from July 1st week to mid-August, where you will be writing one article a week. We understand summer is also a time for vacations, and we are flexible as long as you inform us in advance.
What do we expect from a Young Editor?
Good writing skills and the ability to communicate your thoughts clearly are most important, since you are writing for other young readers. If you have been reading the main articles on Youngzine, that is pretty much the format we expect.
We use current events to explain the underlying context or a concept, so you will need to put your research hats on. It is important that articles be unbiased and state both points of view of an issue. And of course your articles have to be original -- no plagiarizing! We will send you guidelines if you have been selected.
How can I apply?
Send us an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. If you have written for us last year, please mention that in your email.
Lets us know by June 10 if you are interested. If you are new to our summer program, we will ask you to choose from a few topics and write a 300-400 word article. We will select based on your writing skills.
How does being a Young Editor help me?
- Your work will be seen by young readers all over the world.
- Your knowledge on topics deepens, broadens and widens as you research into articles.
- Working with a small team will give you a real-world experience of being a writer!
- You will be giving back to the community, and as a non-profit, we would be happy to acknowledge your efforts as volunteer hours.
Is that reason enough to want to join? We look forward to hearing from you!
