The Debate Over Japanese Whaling

What is the most eccentric dish you have ever tried? In countries across the world, odd dishes such as tuna’s eyeball, fried spiders, or kangaroo are prevalent on the dinner table.

In Japan, whale meat is often found in supermarkets or restaurant menus. Despite new laws prohibiting whale hunting, or whaling, Japan continues to send whale hunters to Antarctica in search of Minke Whales to kill.

In a recent report, it was discovered that 333 Minke Whales were killed under Japanese expeditions with 122 being pregnant whales and another 114 being young whales. These facts have once again sparked distress amongst an international community that has consistently attempted to end whaling for the past few decades.

History of Whaling

Whale hunting, or whaling, grew popular in Japan after World War 2. Due to the enormous cost of maintaining an army and purchasing weapons, Japan became debt-ridden and poor after the war ended. As such, they turned towards whaling in order to provide cheap protein for the people to consume.

Soon, whale meat was found everywhere: in soups, salads, or sushi. Further, the prevalence of whaling and other similar activities to help sustain the Japanese population grew to become a cultural tradition along the coast of Japan and Taiji where they host annual dolphin hunts. In fact, school children who grew up eating whale meat in their school lunches are a part of the generation that currently controls the Japanese government.

As such, even though fewer people eat whale meat now, Japanese officials fondly view the consumption of whale meat as a childhood memory that they desperately desire to hold onto. Thus, there has been a conflict between Japan and countries who oppose whaling.

Legislation To Protect Whales

In 1985, the International Whaling Commission enacted a law that prohibited commercial whaling, or hunting whales for food in every country.

However, there was a loophole in this legislation as whales could still be hunted for scientific research. As a result, countries like Japan, Norway, and Iceland continue to hunt whales using this clause as justification. Moreover, though these are the 3 biggest whaling nations, whaling is still done in Greenland, Russia, the USA, St. Vincent, and others.

As time passed, Australia attempted to curb whaling in Japan by filing a case against Japanese whaling in an international court. The ruling, or what the outcome of the case was, announced that whaling was unnecessary for scientific research, and thus, Japan was not allowed to hunt.

For a while, Japan ended whaling. In 2016, Japan declared that they would limit the number of harmed whales from 900 to 333 while saying that the Minke Whale population was large enough. This proves problematic as scientists have been unable to find how many Minke whales there actually are, and researchers predict that the Minke Whale population has been declining due to hunting.

With 95% of the Japanese population refusing to eat whale meat, there is a growing amount of unconsumed whale meat. Despite this, whale hunting continues, and Japan's President Shinzo Abe has announced that he “will pursue all possibilities” to continue whaling. Hopefully, the international community and Japan will prioritize the preservation of whales over the preservation of whale killing.

It is very sad how quickly we are driving animal species extinct. Commercial whaling should be banned.

I think that whaling should not be allowed at all. Also they should completely close down catching whales and not catch them at all. And the whale population has been going down during the hunting and catching. Also their is a ton more fish that are overpopulated that they could catch instead of putting whales endangered.

what I think that people should not eat whale because they could go extinct, because they are eating so much whale, because in a report it was discovered that 333 Minke Whales were killed under Japanese expeditions with 122 being pregnant whales and another 114 being young whales.

I think that whaling is horrible, I think this because they are killing minke and other types of whales for their meat and in the text it says recently there has been a report and it says "it was discovered that 333 Minke Whales were killed under Japanese expeditions with 122 being pregnant whales and another 114 being young whales". Also in 2016 they limited the amount of whales they could kill from 900 to 333 but that still doesn't make it good for the whales or their population. The people that did the whaling also wasted a lot of the whales meat because 95% of the japenese population would not eat the whale meat.

I thought that this article held several valid points to why the continuos hunting of whales should stop. The article stated that Japan is one of the top three countries that hunts for whales. Japan has served whale as a cheap protein since WWll ended. The whale was used only for protein and meat at first, but later on it was found in soups, salads and sushi. Whale meat was also served in school lunch rooms.

When the legislative law was put in that no country could hunt whales for sport nor for food. Except there was a loophole in this act because whales were still allowed to be hunted for research, Japan used this as a way to continue hunting whales for food.

The article states that Australia had launched a case against Japan to try to curb whaling in an international court room. The ruling of the case ended up showing that whaling was not a necsessary act for research and that Japan was no longer allowed to hunt. Japan did stop hunting for some time then they declared that they would change their number of whales they would hunt from 900 to 333.

I think that whaling should be stopped completely, it is not a necsessary act for food, as there are several other species that are good for food. The whale population has declined lots and several other species aren't like that. The whales that are hunted are considered a cheap source of protein but, there are several other species that are just as cheap and the population is in no danger. These are the reasons and facts that describe why I think whaling should be an act that is no longer allowed.

What I think on this is that whaling should be banned from countries because if there killing more and more fish and other water animals then the population will start to go down and also I think that they should not be able to do this because they said in paragraph three when kids eat the fish then there apart of it too and they currently have control over the government. Also, it should be band because they could go extinct if they keep on killing them and killing them.

I think that this is bad for the whales Environment because of the people invading there space and i think they should ban waling because its not right. if they keep on eating whales there will be no more whales and they will have a problem with that because if they ate all the whales then after the whales were all gone so after that they won't have any more whales to eat so they should stop eating the whales because they will be exinct

I found this very interesting disobeying the law. And that all the wales almost went exempt. in 1985, the International Whaling Commission enacted a law that prohibited commercial whaling, or hunting whales for food in every country.  but how they still do it.

I think that whaling minke whales should not be allowed in the countries that hunt for whales the most. In fact, I think that minke whales shouldn't even be able to be eaten. Minke whales don't harm us and we shouldn't hurt them. People all across the world are taking away the minke whale population. I think that we should stop harming, killing, and eating minke whales.

A while ago in Japan, over 900 whales were harmed a year. Thats a lot of whales. Over the years, the minke whale population would go down and down every single year by over 900! Then, Japan was not allowed to hunt as many whales as before. Japan lowered the whales harmed to over 300. Other countries are lowering the population of whales harmed, too. But, not by as much as Japan.

I think that minke whales still shouldn't be harmed, killed or eaten. Minke whales don't harm anybody, so we shouldn't harm them.

This is a very important issue facing Japan and the Minke Whale population today. I think that whaling is a very important issue and should be stopped for good in order to preserve the lives of whales that are lost due to whaling. There are many points in this article that proves why whaling should stop in Japan.

One reason why I believe this is that in the article, it states that "With 95% of the Japanese population refusing to eat whale meat, there is a growing amount of unconsumed whale meat. Despite this, whale hunting continues." So that means that there are more and more people refusing to eat whale meat, but yet Japan is still whaling, so they are killing whales for no apparent reason.

Another reason why I believe this is that one of the very few reasons why whaling continues is because, as the article says, "Japanese officials fondly view the consumption of whale meat as a childhood memory that they desperately desire to hold onto." Which doesn't sound like a good enough reason to continue whaling, especially now that fewer people are eating it.

A final reason as to why I believe this is that for a while now, Japan stopped whaling, until 2016. In 2016, Japan declared that they would cut down the number of harmed whales from 900 to 333, because "The Minke Whale population was large enough." it was then said that "this proves problematic as scientists have been unable to find how many Minke whales there actually are, and researchers predict that the Minke Whale population has been declining due to hunting." So the Minke Whale population is still declining, despite the fact that Japan has said that the Minke Whale population was large enough, which is why they continued hunting.

Japan still has enough time to stop this issue and possibly save the Minke Whale population if they would just let go of the sentimental value of it and start looking at the issues they are causing. I believe that whaling should stop in Japan, and that this issue could soon be stopped.

I think that they should stop whaling because when it comes to the environment, whales help regulate the flow of food by helping to keep a stable food chain and making sure that some animal species don't overpopulate the ocean. Even whale poop plays a large role in the environment by helping to offset carbon in the atmosphere! In the text, it says that the minke whale population is normal, there is a chance that they can still go down.

I think whaling is a very bad thing to do becuase it kill so many whales, It said in the text there was a report that was discovered and it said that 333 Minke Whales were killed 122 were pregnant whales and 114 were young whales. As you can see that is a lot of whales and 122 pregnant whales is really bad because all of those females could have babies to higher the population of minke whales but since they  killed them not any more. It is also bad becasue in the text it said in 2016 95% of Japans people refused to eat whales which then waisted so much meat and still there president Shinzo Abe still says they would hunt whales.

I think that they should stop Whaling Because in the text it says that the mink whale population is declining because of whaling and the bad thing is that other countrys made it so japan can't hunt whalr but japan found they could say they were researching whale but they were still using them as food.
