Let's explore something called a mindset. There are two types of mindsets, one is called a growth mindset and the other is a fixed mindset.
Knowing these mindsets can help change your thinking and become a better person. Let's talk more about these two mindsets.
A fixed mindset is considered rather unhealthy. It's the total opposite of a growth mindset and isn't exactly good for you. If you have a fixed mindset, below are the kinds of thoughts that might be going on in your mind.
- It's too hard, so I can't do it.
- I am only good at certain things.
- I don't like it when someone gives me feedback or criticism.
- I don't know this, so I might as well give up.
These thoughts won't help you grow at all. It's hard to change back into a healthier growth mindset if you're so used to being fixed. It's fine to be shy at some things but you have to open up your brain just a little more to grow and learn new things. You can't give up. You have to have faith and determination in yourself and say "I can do it."
This is a kind of mindset which is really healthy. It’s like a guide to your brain that takes you on journeys to explore new things. Your brain exercises and stretches in a healthy, positive way.
If you have a growth mindset, you allow your brain to stretch a little out of your comfort zone. You allow yourself into difficult situations and slowly get better at whatever you are doing whether it is at school, work, playground, or even at home.
Here're some things that people with a growth mindset might think.
- I should try new things and let nothing stop me.
- I am trying to be original and trying to do something unique and different.
- I don't give up easily.
- I will accept challenges.
- I can't do this........YET!
Let's explore a strong and bold word called "Yet". Yet is an extremely useful word. This word is amazing and my teacher taught me how to use it.
Yet is a word of comfort and shows that you don't give up. It is helpful to say something like "I don't know how to do this YET!” Let's take a look at two sentences. Compare the following, "I can't do this EVER versus "I can't do this YET".
Think about what kind of person you are and think about which sentence is a fixed mindset and which a growth mindset is. If you want to change, in your mind, think of the power of YET!
I hope that you make progress towards a growth mindset. It's fun to look back at how you started something and how much you grew in it whether it is sports, studies, cooking, art, and many more. Make sure it is good progress and meaningful.
