Robert Langer

Pioneer in the field of Biomaterials and one of twelve Institute Professors at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Dr. Robert Langer runs a lab of over 150 researchers -- considered the largest biomedical engineering center in the world. Dr. Langer's life is an inspiration that even if one takes time finding their passion and there are setbacks, it is important never to give up.

Meet An Ecologist: Jenna Pruett

Jenna Pruett is an ecologist who studies the interesting ways that nest temperatures of turtles influence the eggs inside. Growing up in a small rural town, Jenna did not quite know what she wated to become when she grew up. However, she found her passion, thanks to a college biology teacher who inspired her love for science. In her free time, Jenna enjoys reading, playing music and looking for reptiles and amphibians outside.

Inspired By A Biology Teacher

You always hear about people who knew exactly what they want to do with their life from the time they were four years old. They fell in love with something early on that led them to their dream job. That did not happen for me. Like the science itself, my journey toward being a scientist was slow, and helped along by many teachers and professors who revealed, showed me the way. Now, I get to spend each day learning new things and creating new knowledge Small Town To A Big College Like most students who earn good grades in math and science classes during grade school, I found people encouraging...

What Do Ecologists Do?

One thing I learned over the course of my time in college is that “Science” is a big word. I don’t mean big in terms of length but in terms of meaning! Science can mean so many things, and being a scientist can look very different depending on the types of questions you want to answer. Some scientists wear white coats and mix chemicals for most of the day. Some sit at computers and do lots of complicated math problems. Some make observations of the natural world and design experiments to answer questions we have about how nature works. These are just some of the possibilities for working as a...

Hot Chicks and Cool Dudes!

Science is all about questions. The type of questions depends on your specialty, and in my area of Ecology, we ask and answer questions about how an animal's environment affects its life. Ecology can be studied using lots of different living things. Some people study the ecology of animals while some study the ecology of microorganisms like bacteria that are too small for us to see with just our eyes. These studies, and all the ones in between, provide important information about how living things work together in the world around us. Studying Painted Turtles For my research, I study painted...

Meet A Chemist: Emily Hardy

Emily Hardy is a graduate student at Auburn University. She is synthetic chemist in a nuclear chemistry lab where she designs new sensors for uranium. Uranium is a metal used in nuclear power plants and for weapons, and if it gets into the environment, we need to be able to find it. Emily has lived in 7 states and 2 countries because her dad was in the Navy. She went to high school and college in Virginia and then moved to Auburn, Alabama to complete her PhD in chemistry. Even though she moved around all the time, she enjoyed going to school. She always loved puzzles and when she took her...

Burning Salts, To Inspiring Young Girls

I grew up in a military family and moved around a lot. I went to 8 schools in two countries before I was 16 and met a lot of really good friends. I saw different cultures and met people from different backgrounds than me. One thing that stayed constant was my family, and I think that is why I am so close to my siblings, Gillian (GG) and Will. It also is a part of why I love to travel to new places. Even though I moved around all the time, I always enjoyed going to school. I didn’t always love science though. When I was little I always just thought it was a lot of facts, and it wasn’t until I...

Chemists Are Everywhere!

If you have ever taken any medicine you should thank a chemist! A long time ago pharmacists or doctors were often chemists. Now chemists still help design and make new medicines. Chemists can do everything. There are chemists that make new plastics, chemists that make fertilizers to help plants grow better, chemists that make new batteries, chemists that study how your body works to help find ways to cure disease, and even chemists that help brew beer. The Work Of Chemists Generally, chemists work with elements and atoms that you can find on the periodic table. There are five main groups of...
