Breaking barriers, supporting victims of sexual harassment, and making history. These are just a few of the many things Oprah Winfrey did on Sunday January 7 at the Golden Globes, a yearly prestigious awards ceremony that recognizes excellence in television and film.

Winfrey was the first African American woman to receive the Cecil B. DeMille award, a lifetime achievement award that is named in honor of its first recipient. She joined the ranks of legendary actors such as Meryl Streep, Morgan Freeman, and Audrey Hepburn, among others.

What was so unique about Winfrey was the speech she gave after receiving the award. She recalled how watching the first African American to receive the award inspired her to pursue her dreams. She hoped that becoming the first black woman to receive the award will similarly inspire the future generations. She also expressed gratitude to the women who had the courage to share their story and take a stand to end the abuse. She brought to light the story of Recy Taylor, a young black woman who was assaulted and whose white abusers were never persecuted.

Through her exceptional speech and achievement, Oprah Winfrey truly made history at the Golden Globes.
