Many educators have remarked that Youngzine is a perfect complement to academic material, and can be a great resource for teachers and their classes. Learning through current events not only makes students more aware of what's going on in the world, but also helps absorb concepts better.

Youngzine provides a safe and private blog environment for classrooms - a constructive, creative and controlled way for teachers to create classroom assignments and foster discussions on current events.

Youngzine provides special features just for you, if you sign up as a Teacher:

  • Each of your classes gets a unique "Classroom Code" that identifies the students in that class. Your students will join the classroom using this code.
  • For each class, you can post assignments and have students respond. You can include specific articles and quizzes in each assignment.
  • For each of your classes, you will see a report of your student's activities: their comments, assignment responses, points and quiz results.

These are some creative ways in which some teachers are already using Youngzine.

  • Teachers allow their children to make comments on articles (public comments), take quizzes, rate articles, participate in contests -- features that are available to all.
  • Teachers create custom assignments in their classrooms and have students respond and discuss, right on Youngzine! This is a great way to gauge their children's understanding and foster a discussion/debate between students.
  • Some teachers ask for subjective opinions or ask to summarize an article, as a way to encourage children to think and write. As an example: "What do you think of Oxford English Dictionary's decision to add words like OMG and LOL?"

It only takes 2 minutes to get started: JOIN YOUNGZINE, go the the Classroom Tab, and create your classroom.

If you have any questions or comments, let us know - we'd love to make this work for your class.

I agree, I am homeschooled but I do a co-op every week.
I hate the "oh your homeschooled, how do you make friends?" thing.

luv ur attitude tryn :) what do kids in school get in trouble for? socializing.
soo.... homeschoolers are not weird kids who sit at home and watch documentaries about newton's laws.
no, we are regular human beings

well.....if you take good notes, study, and listen in the lectures, then you should remember what you learned.

I go to school and I'm just in third grade but I do 11 grade tests. About 20-50 times I got 100% of the questions correctly.

hey I am in 6th grade too! :)I do school with a family friend and the mom (my teacher) gives a LOT of homework too! I once had almost TWO PAGES!!! But then again, the letters were a little bit big so it wasn't as bad. :) I actually like getting a lot of homework because I feel pushed to do something else besides go on the computer or listen to my MP3 player.... hi!

that totally depends on what kind of person is teaching you. When I start my school day I usually start my schoolwork by 8:00 and I'm always in my clothes. Some days I really do feel like I want to stay in my pj's, but I always feel more alive and willing to do my school! if you get home schooled (which you really should because it is really awesome and way less stressful) you can stay in your pajamas if you want! Just stating my opinion! :)

I'm a teacher, and I also tutor many kids from all different situations. What I've found is that the success of homeschooling depends on the home and the individual student. I've tutored a child who missed 2 years of school, was removed from the home, and he tells everyone he was home schooled. I've also taught kids in middle school who were home schooled and are brilliant and make amazing contributions to our class. Homeschooling requires a very strong home foundation where learning is valued and a high priority. Not everyone will show this level of commitment to their child's academic success. Also, if there are special learning needs such as a reading disability, it may be difficult because of knowledge or financial issues to address learning difficulties at home.

That's not necessarily true with ALL homeschoolers though.
A lot of homeschoolers take college classes when theyre in highschool, actually!

hear hear. smaller classes, later get to school times, and a bond with their teacher are all great effects of homeschooling. also, contrary to popular opinion that homeschoolers are unsocialized, I also think that homeschoolers are better at socializing, adapting, fitting in, and being independent
