What is common between these two islands?

Kiribati is an island-nation in the South Pacific, and so is Baker Island. What is common between them, especially in the month of January?

Tryn28 and Kiwi_BJ won the contest!

Tryn28 says, "kiribati is the first to see the new year and baker is the last because of the date line"

Kiwi_BJ says, "even though Kiribati and Baker Island are very close to each other, there is always an average 12 hour time difference between them, because they are both on different sides of the International Date Line (which bends around Kiribati)."

Maybe water temperature or tides? I think it's tides though. that sounds more reasonable

Tides? In January, there's a tide that's really high; it's called spring tide.

My first guess is that even though Kiribati and Baker Island are very close to each other, there is always an average 12 hour time difference between them, because they are both on different sides of the International Date Line (which bends around Kiribati). I'm not sure what "especially in the month of January" is hinting at, but I think it's because Daylight Saving Time can push the difference even further during summer months? My second guess is that because they are on different sides of the equator, their seasons are reversed. My third guess is that during the warmer summer months, the oceans creep in closer, as discussed in some previous climate change articles.
