Giant Prehistoric Salamanders Found

You may know of salamanders as small, lizard-like creatures, around 10-20cm long. Now, try to picture a similar creature, with a flatter head – and inflate it to the size of a small car!

An extraordinary creature indeed! A team of paleontologists identified at least 10 of these super-salamanders, from a jumble of bones unearthed in Portugal. And this seems to be just the tip of the iceberg. Let’s see what they found.

What Are These Super-salamanders?

‘Metoposaurus algarvensis’ is the technical name given to these enormous amphibians belonging to the late Triassic period, approximately 220-230 million years ago.

At that time, the landmass on Earth was still unified - known as Pangaea. The climate in those days was much more hot and dry compared to the present. So it was natural that the animal kingdom was dominated by amphibians, which led a part-water and part-land life.

The super-salamanders had plenty of sharp teeth fixed to a large flat head. The paleontologist in charge, Dr.Stephen Brusatte from the University of Edinburgh, described it as a head resembling a toilet seat.

Given their large size, these creatures ranked high among the apex predators of that period. The dinosaurs and other mammals in that period were small and almost definitely preyed upon by these carnivores when they came near water bodies. Think of swamps in Louisiana and Florida - populated by crocs that feed off smaller animals.

A Mass Grave

The site in Algarve, Portugal contains a huge number of bones of these creatures. From the relatively small area excavated, as many as 10 distinct individuals have been identified. Scientists have proposed a theory as to why such a mass grave developed.

We know that in the later Triassic age, as Pangaea began dividing, it triggered many volcanoes and other upheavals. Perhaps the familiar water habitats near these animals were transformed by these changes. Lakes may have dried up and rivers could have been diverted.

Massive creatures like the giant salamanders would not have been able to move quickly in search of more favorable environments. Large numbers would, therefore, have perished in the same location.

These giant salamanders are a common ancestor to today’s salamanders and newts. Knowing how such creatures adapted to environmental shifts helps us trace the journey back in time. While similar fossils have been found in other parts of the world (Africa and North America), this find indicates a distinct and different species.

In fact, we do know this. If such large predators had not died out, dinosaurs and mammals might never have had the chance to evolve in their own ways.

WOW I think we should put these in a very big museum big lizards from the past but is it not amazing 220 million years ago the ground you are standing on was populated by all kinds of crazy lizards! what else did they find?

WOW that's awesome if I lived from the Triassic age I think I would be terrified but on the other hand if I killed one I would have meat for a long time. What would you be or do if you lived in the Triassic Age?

I think that I would do the same thing that you are talking about

If they were the apex predator what about the t -rex?

Very cool, I ts nice to see that everyday scientist are finding new creature in the Dino ago and now days.

Yes I agree with you that it is very cool that they can find these amazing creatures. And that they are millions of years old and hard as rock.

arorac's picture
arorac April 1, 2015 - 9:10am

I agree, I also think that it is really awesome that we are still finding new species of Dino's even now.

Yeh its nice that there finding new creatures and learning about the past. every year it seams like they more and more new animals and other things. Do you agree with me.

I think that it is cool that these scientists found these super-salamanders. I wish that I was one of them to have found these prehistoric mammals. Don't you think that these mammals are cool? Did they have any predators like the T-Rex or other big dinosaurs?

perlenek's picture
perlenek April 1, 2015 - 9:09am

The salamanders didn't have any major predators, as far as science knows. Tyrannosaurus Rex wouldn't have been a predator to the 'super' salamanders because it didn't exist during the same time period as the salamanders.

tylerh7 April 1, 2015 - 9:07am

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing about the predators thing. I think they were pretty close to the top of the food chain, but there had to been a couple of predators.

These are so cool. It's amazing how they were able to find and identify when they were alive. It is also cool that they were able to identify what their species was.

davidh5's picture

This is really cool especially the end where it said that maybe if they didn't die out we wouldn't have developed like we are today, just imagine that, just because of one animal.

I thought this article was pretty cool too! I had that same thought on how could just one animal have that big of an effect! It's crazy!!

marior's picture

I am glad that the animals did get to evolve and not stay the same

I think that this is a amazing find and is very interesting to me. Just to think that at one point in time those little salamanders you have at home were once the size of a small car. The fact that they had a toilet shaped head with teeth, that's a description that I can visualize. I find this article very interesting and would love to further read into this find of prehistoric salamanders.

perlenek's picture
perlenek March 31, 2015 - 9:12am

I think that its amazing to have such creatures so closely related to todays salamanders, pushing the theory of evolution even farther.

austins6's picture

I think that the giant salamanders where probably a big problem when they were a round. what do you think?

lexieb2's picture
lexieb2 April 2, 2015 - 1:05pm

I agree with you that they were probable a big problem in their time. I also think that they would be an even bigger problem today. I believe this because of all the growth in our everyday lives.

bryces's picture
bryces April 1, 2015 - 9:10am

I think that nobody would probably know because it was 130 million years ago. So people would probably not know what was going on.

elizabethv2's picture
elizabethv2 March 31, 2015 - 8:33am

Looking at the picture up top I think that they did have a nose like a toilet seat. Maybe they were like a cross between a crocodile and a lizard. I think that they will find many like these in the future, don't you?

jordanl5's picture
jordanl5 March 31, 2015 - 8:32am

I think its amazing that there use to be other bigger animals on Pangaea and if they didn't become a animal there would be no such thing as dinosaurs because they wouldn't have evolved without the giant salamanders being there during Pangaea

noahh2's picture
noahh2 March 31, 2015 - 8:32am

Its really cool how they found giant salamanders also how they were as big as a small car. Last what would we do with the salamanders if they were alive now?

bradys2's picture
bradys2 April 1, 2015 - 8:17am

I think that if the world still had giant salamanders it would be bad because they could be used to fight each other kind of like dog fight but with giant salamanders.

elizabethv2's picture
elizabethv2 March 31, 2015 - 8:31am

I think that this is awesome and is really cool. I think it makes sense that they all died in the same spot because of volcanoes. Do you have a different idea for why the died together?

lexieb2's picture
lexieb2 April 2, 2015 - 1:07pm

They could of died the way the dinosaurs died. There are many theories of why the beasts died, so why couldn't these big salamanders die the same way?

shelbear's picture
shelbear March 31, 2015 - 8:30am

I think that if scientist had never found fossils before then we wouldn't be able to know what earth was like before man kind. Knowing that their are larger ancestors of animals that are small today, do you think there are even larger ancestors to bigger animals today?

jordanl5's picture
jordanl5 April 1, 2015 - 8:14am

I agree with you that the ancestors of salamanders and such used to be so huge and thinking of what there ancestors must have been like is crazy to think that they could be humungous and we don't even know about them yet.

domanich's picture
domanich March 31, 2015 - 8:28am

I think lizards are cool I have 4 geckos 3 chameleons 4 noels and 2 tree frogs. lizards are way cool they can be different colors different size they are a amazing.

sidneem's picture

I Love salamanders and I have two of my own but they are not the size of a small car. I think it is very cool that they have found these fossils. What do you think about them finding them? Do you think that they will find more in the future?

cesarm's picture
cesarm April 2, 2015 - 11:30am

I think that they will find more in the future. We hadn't figure much about the earth and probably will find more fossils and fossils.

kendrickk's picture
kendrickk March 31, 2015 - 8:27am

These huge salamanders are pretty neat animals but I'm just curious that since their finding these animals from a couple thousand years ago what other animals will they find from Pangaea.

brandonh2's picture
brandonh2 March 31, 2015 - 8:26am

I think that the salamanders are cool hot they evolved from big to small cause there habituate.

isaiahr's picture
isaiahr April 1, 2015 - 9:08am

yeah me too and i think it would be scary to see one of these things. Where do you think these live.

danielw2's picture
danielw2 March 31, 2015 - 8:24am

I think it is very cool they found these larger salamanders. But it would be very scary if they were still alive and tried to bite you with their sharp teeth.

joshm7's picture
joshm7 March 31, 2015 - 8:24am

The giant salamanders seam scary for there time and could hurt you pretty bad if they where still alive today. It has large sharp teeth and are kind of like crocks that live in a swamp.

noahh2's picture
noahh2 April 2, 2015 - 8:28am

I don't think that they could hurt you that bad besides giving someone a heart attack if they scare easy. They do kind of look like crocs but not really.

delfinas's picture
delfinas March 31, 2015 - 7:35am

This is really cool I mean I've always loved lizards and reptiles and others. do you think that these lizards/alligators are from the Triassic age?

peytonw4's picture
peytonw4 April 1, 2015 - 9:11am

I like reptiles too, It is crazy how much bigger animals were back in time. Imagine if they were still that size today.
