Hmm... I though that measuring the distance of a star had to do with the apparent brightness and the absolute brightness. Cool, though!

The apparent brightness is probably how bright it looks, and the absolute brightness is probably how bright it is.

That's correct. The apparent brightness is how bright it appears from Earth, and the absolute brightness is how bright it actually is.
