A new game is taking China by storm! You can find many people waiting anxiously for a frog to return from his travel or even just drop a postcard from the city he is visiting!

The mobile phone game called Tabi Kaeru, or Traveling Frog by Hit-Point, was developed by the same company that also released the incredibly popular game Neko-Atsume in 2014. In fact, in the Apple App Store in China, the app has risen to the top of the free simulation game category!

How is the game played? A frog sits in a stone hut, eating and reading while you collect clovers from the front yard. The clover is used to buy food, which the frog takes on its journey. Then, the frog leaves on a trip for an unspecified amount of time, sometimes hours, sometimes even days, and returns with snapshots of its journey.

The game’s appeal is not obvious, but many players have noted that they enjoy the feeling of traveling vicariously through the frog. Still, others say that since the game requires very little time or effort, it is non-competitive and relaxing to play. Some suggest that the connection to child-rearing, or taking care of the little frog as a parent would, helps them connect to the game.

The popularity of the game even prompted China's official newspaper to issue a warning to its citizens to embrace life to the fullest and not wait around for a virtual frog!
