Meet A Fish Scientist: Erin Loury

Erin had always felt pulled in two different directions, drawn by both her love of science and nature and her love of writing and the arts. She decided to combine the two passions, and studied marine biology. She decided to study fish because they are like a link between people and the ocean, and are an important food source for both humans and marine animals. Today, she works with FISHBIO, a fisheries company, as a Communications Director where she blends her passion for science, conservation, and writing. She also works with local communities in Southeast Asia, teaching them how to conserve...

A Passion For Science and Writing

I have always felt pulled in two different directions, drawn by both my love of science and nature and my love of writing and the arts. Third grade was a big year for me: it was when I discovered my love of creative writing after hearing my teacher read some of my stories to the class. I discovered my inner environmentalist after reading a book about what kids can do to “save the Earth,” and even discovered my love of manatees, my favorite animal after my class “adopted” one. Love for Nature I have always loved reading and decided I wanted to become a writer when I grew up. I have also always...

Marine Biology: Why Study Fish?

I am a fish scientist who has worked in the fields of marine biology (by studying fish in the ocean) and freshwater biology (by studying fish in rivers and lakes). I started studying marine biology in college and graduate school. What is Marine Biology? Marine biologists can study any form of life in the ocean, whether it is microscopic drifting plants and animals called plankton, seaweeds and seagrasses, colorful invertebrates and fish, or mammals and birds. Marine biologists study how these plants and animals survive in an often challenging environment, and how their populations change...

My Work As A Fish Scientist

Today I work for a small fisheries consulting company called FISHBIO, which allows me to wear multiple hats as part of my job. It’s a style that fits my personality and helps me explore and combine my different interests, including science, conservation, and writing. My job title is Communications Director, and most of my work is related to science communication. I spend most days at the computer, where I write and edit stories for the company’s website and newsletter, update our social media posts and help edit technical reports and proposals for funding. I also work on education programs,...

I study the interesting ways that nest temperatures of turtles influence the eggs inside. In my free time, I enjoy reading, playing music and looking for reptiles and amphibians outside.

Yo estudio las formas interesantes que la temperatura de los nidos de tortugas influye en los huevos que hay dentro. En mi tiempo libre, disfruto leer escuchar música y buscar reptiles y anfibios en el ambiente.

Meet A Geologist: Leticia De Marchi

Have you wondered - What is going on under the surface of the Earth? You could dig a hole to find out, but that can only go so deep. What’s happening below the deepest hole we can dig? What is the center of the Earth made of? How are the mountains made? Why do earthquakes happen more in some places than others? Why do we have volcanos and why do they erupt? What can we learn about dinosaurs just by finding their fossils in certain types of rocks? These are the sorts of questions that keep geologists hard at work every day. Hi, I am Leticia De Marchi. I am a geologist in graduate school at...

My Fascination For Planet Earth

I was born in Campinas, a big city in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. When I was a child my parents moved to a farm not too far from the city. As a kid, I had the opportunity to be in nature every day. I used to ride a horse alone in the countryside and, on these horse rides, I was always thinking about how things in nature were made. I wondered how plants, soil, rocks, rivers, and mountains were all related. With this curiosity, I started getting really interested in the history of the planet. I was always reading books and watching documentaries about the Earth. Through these books, I...

What Do Geologists Do?

I am a geologist which means I am a detective of the Earth and how it came to be as it is today. When you look at the Earth, it might not seem like it’s changing much at all. But it is. Mountains are forming and eroding away, continents are moving around, rocks are being made and destroyed, and canyons are being carved out by rivers and glaciers. All of this is happening at a very slow pace. But sometimes geology happens fast. For example when a volcano erupts or an earthquake happens. Asking Questions Geologists study a ton of different topics about the Earth. What is going on under the...
