A Memorable Trip To Canada

I traveled to Banff National Park and Jasper National Park and here’s my advice: Don’t read Hatchet by Gary Paulsen if you’re going to Canada. For anyone who hasn’t read Hatchet, it’s about a teenager Brian who rams a plane into a lake in the Canadian forest. In the Canadian wilderness, Brian encounters a bear, gets stung by a porcupine, and even gets hit by a tornado. Now you know why it was impossible to sleep. The first few days of my Banff vacation were a blur, arriving in Canada at 2:00 am, going sightseeing with summer snow flurries (not an oxymoron in Canada), hiking with the...

Google Maps Gets An Update

From the paper maps we used only a few years ago, navigation is transitioning into the digital space and becoming more and more efficient. Travel doesn’t require printing maps, highlighting routes, and squinting at small text to keep track of where we are anymore--technology does it all for us. Google Maps, one of the world’s most popular navigation systems, is launching a new feature that is designed to help prevent speeding. The lower left corner of the screen now contains an icon indicating the speed limit, and along the user’s route are orange camera icons that show where speed trap...

Women's March In Its Third Year

Last Saturday, the third annual Women’s March took place with women all around the world coming together and marching in various large cities for social justice causes including immigrant rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, and workplace equality. The turnout was smaller than that of years past, likely due to poor weather, controversial statements made by the founders of the movement, and the movement losing strength with time. However, despite this, the march was still successful and drew out many powerful women including Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the youngest woman ever to serve in the...

Ethiopia's First Female President

A few weeks ago, Ethiopia took a major step in electing its first female president. Sahle-Work Zewde was approved by a unanimous vote in Ethiopia’s Parliament after the previously elected president resigned unexpectedly the day before. Zewde is an experienced woman, having previously served as a special representative to the African Union and was the first female head of the African UN Office. Although her presidential powers are limited to appointing ambassadors, granting pardons, and receiving foreign envoys, the social significance of her status is immense. Ethiopia has been making great...
