Would You Buy This AI-Painting?

Artificial intelligence has made great progress in the last few years. We’ve taught computers to do everything from translating text to drone flights, but can you imagine an algorithm being used to create art? Recently, a piece of AI-generated artwork was created and auctioned off for a surprising $432,500. That is about forty-five times higher than the estimated value! The piece, titled Portrait of Edward de Belamy, is the first AI-created painting to have been auctioned off. The portrait was created by Obvious, a Parisian group of three friends who’ve been working on a project to create art...

A Tiny Hawaiian Island Disappears

At the beginning of October, Hurricane Walaka swept by many of Hawaii’s smaller islands. In the hurricane’s wake, East Island, part of the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument in Hawaii, completely disappeared underwater. The tiny 11-acre island was hit front and center by the storm. This small volcanic outcrop was formed just like other Hawaiian islands, from underwater volcanoes. They came to the surface when the sea levels dropped. East Island was not habited by people. However, it was a vital nesting site for endangered sea turtles and monk seals. Scientists estimate that up to 96%...

Fake Moon: What Do You Think?

With China’s growing population and increasing urban space, the cost of electricity is rising in the cities. As a solution, China’s government is planning to create an artificial moon to reduce the amount of electricity needed in urban areas. This artificial moon is a satellite, covered in a material that will reflect the sun’s rays. The moon is scheduled to launch from Xichang Satellite Launch Center in 2020 and light Chengdu, a city located in the Sichuan Province. If the first one proves successful, more may be launched into space. But for now, the artificial moon is still going through...

Saga Finds An Ancient Sword

When eight-year-old Saga Vanecek went swimming in a Swedish lake, she certainly didn’t expect to find an ancient historical relic. As she swam, she felt something she believed was a stick, and when she pulled it out, she realized it was actually a rusted sword that was about three feet long. Her family ended up taking the sword to the Jonkoping Museum, which confirmed to them that the sword came from the 5th or 6th century- just before the Viking era. The sword was surprisingly well preserved despite its age, even having its original wood and leather based cover still on it. When...

A Call From A Gecko!

At Kei Kai Ola Hospital, a marine mammal center that takes care of monk seals in Hawaii, Dr. Claire Simeon began to receive calls on her phone, one after another. After receiving around a dozen, she headed back into the hospital to make sure everything was okay and find the culprit. When she arrived at the laboratory, crawling on the phone was a small Hawaiian gecko walking all over the touchscreen pad, making calls to people. Dr. Simeon assured the others that nothing was wrong and even posted a picture of the gecko on her Twitter account, with the internet melting from this adorable act!...

Facebook Hack Affects Users

Facebook is one of the most widely-used social media sites around the world. However, last Tuesday, hackers breached Facebook’s cybersecurity system, allowing them to access the private information of over 50 million users, including Instagram, Whatsapp, and other sites connected to the company. Many of these users were based in Europe, specifically in and around Ireland. The attack happened as a result of a flaw in the new 2017 “view as” feature, which allows users to view their own profiles as if it were not their own. The “view as” feature produced a glitch that gave hackers access codes (...

The Iconic Beetle Is No More

Two weeks back, Volkswagen announced that it will be retiring its famous Volkswagen Beetle. The last model will be called the Final Edition Series, and it’ll end production in July 2019. Volkswagen made their decision due to rapidly declining sales on the Beetle models, but many say that they will miss what was easily one of the most recognizable and famous cars on the market for many generations. The Beetle’s legacy began in 1931, when Ferdinand Porsche, the man behind the luxurious Porsche line was commissioned by Adolf Hitler to create a “people’s car”. The Beetle ended up entering North...

Hurricane Terms: What Do They Mean?

Last week, even as North and South Carolina were evacuating people in preparation for Hurricane Florence, a sinister Category 5 Typhoon Mangkhut was barreling its way towards East Asia. Mangkhut has become one of the most powerful storms of 2018 causing devastation and landslides in the northern Philippines and killing 81 people with its Category 5 winds. It then crossed the South China Sea and hit Hong Kong and the Guangdong Province of China with winds of 100 mph. More than 2.45 million people have been evacuated from their homes and relocated to a safe shelter. Additionally, water levels...
